Who We Are

Grace Chapel is a community of Christian believers who seek to grow in maturity and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

What We Believe

We believe the Bible is the Word of God. We believe the writings contained in the Scriptures are verbally inspired of God and inerrant in the original writings. We believe the Bible is the absolute authority in matters of faith and life.
We believe that there is one only God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We believe Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of a virgin, Mary. We believe Jesus is true God and true man. We believe He lived a perfect and sinless life.
We believe in the concept and reality of sin. We believe sin is any thought, word or deed in contrast to the principles and commands found in the Bible. We believe sin can be either an act of omission or commission. The Bible does not grade or classify sin as mortal or venial. Personal sin has both temporal and eternal consequences. The advent of sin resulted in both physical death and spiritual death, which is eternal separation from God.
We believe our salvation cannot be earned and is never deserved. We believe Jesus died for the sins of the world as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice. All who believe the “good news” that Jesus died on their behalf, to pay a sin debt we could never pay, are reconciled to God and are adopted into the family of God. We are saved by grace through faith, not by behavior, good intentions, church membership, attendance or acts of penance.
We believe local assemblies of followers of Jesus should regularly baptize individuals as they come to faith in Jesus and celebrate the Lord’s Table. We believe the Lord’s Table is the occasion for believers to reflect on the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. There is no merit or grace connected to the Lord’s Table other than the blessing connected with times of reflection and repentance.
We believe the Easter narrative. We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of Jesus, in His ascension into Heaven, and in His present life there for us, as Advocate, and the only Mediator between God and man.
We believed Jesus’ last words when He said He would return to earth. We believe in the personal and bodily return of our Jesus to set up His Kingdom upon the earth, where He will reign in righteousness and justice.

Gregg Smyrl

Pastor to International Scholars and Students

Samuel Gregg Smyrl (we know him as Gregg) has been on staff at Grace Chapel since 2005. He served as the Pastor of Missions and Seniors until 2011 and now, as the pastor of International Students and Scholars, although he first started attending Grace Chapel in 1956, when he was 5 years old. Gregg received his B.A. in History at Wheaton College, and earned his M.Div from Biblical Theological Seminary. Gregg and his wife Nancy were married in 1977 and served together with CrossWorld in the Dominican Republic from 1981 to 2004. Their children, Jonathan, Philip, and Anne were all born there.

Gregg also serves with China Outreach Ministries, and he loves the opportunities he has to meet new people from many parts of China, and showing them new things – especially the Gospel. Gregg has an interest in learning many aspects of different cultures to be able to communicate more effectively.

Terry Hosan

Office Manager

Terry Hosan is Grace Chapel’s Office Manager; coordinating day-to-day operations and providing support to all our ministry leaders.

Terry has attended Grace Chapel since 1985 when her family moved to this area. She has a degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is glad to be putting that to use in her role as Office Manager. She has served in many capacities at Grace Chapel including Children’s Ministries, Mom’s Unlimited, short-term missions teams and various places in the music ministry before starting to work in the office in 2006. In her “spare time,” she loves to read.

Terry and her husband, David, have 10 children, 3 grandchildren and reside in Havertown.

MaryAnn Alderfer

Children’s Ministry Director

MaryAnn Alderfer has been involved in teaching children about the Bible for nearly 20 years. She has a BA in education and six years of classroom teaching experience, and has worked with children in many different venues. She loves telling stories, especially when those stories communicate the truth of God’s word to children (and if the stories include silly voices and sound effects then that’s even better). MaryAnn and her husband Dave have two young sons. She acknowledges that parenting is hard work, and says she has a weekly goal of keeping her children alive until Saturday. Eighteen years is overwhelming; it’s easier to just start over every Sunday. MaryAnn is responsible for the first through fifth grade programming and is excited about partnering with parents to raise children who love Jesus.

We are looking for a part-time on-site preschool director.
